What is a Phobia?

A phobia is an intense and overwhelming fear of a specific object, situation or even feeling. The feelings of fear and anxiety that are experienced are way out of proportion to the actual object or situation, and this can lead to someone avoiding it completely. If it is something that is easily avoidable, this may not be much of a problem, but many people will go to great lengths to avoid the object of their phobia. This can cause them miss out on important parts of their lives and become isolated.

Relationships can also be affected if a person is no longer able to enjoy the same lifestyle as their partner. If avoidance is not possible, people with phobias can also suffer a huge amount of stress whilst dreading the unavoidable situation where they will have to face their phobia.

Phobias are a type of Anxiety disorder and should be treated seriously. It can be quite common for someone with a phobia to be told by others that ‘there is nothing to be scared of’ or even that they are ‘being silly’. A phobic response is out of conscious control, so whilst someone might try to face their phobia for others benefit, the fear will remain, and it could be highly unpleasant for them and lead to anxiety in other areas of their life.
